Abstract:Professor Kleiner will discuss the monuments on the Acropolis of Athens, especially the Parthenon--the “perfect Greek temple”--not only as masterworks of architecture and sculpture but also in the light of the Persian Wars and the controversial political and economic program of Pericles.

About the speaker: Fred Kleiner is Professor of History of Art and Archaeology and Chair of the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Boston University. He is the author of the most widely read introductory textbook in the English language on the history of art, Gardner’s Art through the Ages: A Global History (14th edition, 2012; 11th edition translated into Chinese), and more than a hundred publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A History of Roman Art, which won the 2007 “Texty” Award in the United States for a new college textbook in the humanities and social sciences. From 1985 to 1998, he was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology, the official journal of the Archaeological Institute of America and the largest-circulation scholarly journal of archaeology in the world. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University’s Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, a Fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association. He is currently working on a new monograph, Art and Politics in Imperial Rome, to be published by Cambridge University Press.
